While Toy Story is not a classic fairy tale like Cinderella, there was an original plan for the movie that was changed quite a bit before releasing the Toy Story that we know today. Interestingly enough, it sort of reflects the usual aspects of a fairy tale.
Originally, the story involved a wind up drummer/one man band toy named Tinny, who goes on many adventures with his other toy friends in hopes of being loved and played with by a child after accidentally falling out of his original "family's" car at a gas station. After numerous problems arise and the toys are put in danger by a dog named Baby (like the dog that Andy gets in Toy Story... here is one similarity), the toys ultimately end up in a kindergarten class where they are played with and they all live... you guessed it... happily ever after.

Whoa! I totally did not know that about Toy Story, Caroline -- but I'd be the first to admit that I don't know nearly as much about Pixar movies. I agree that I think I like the plot of the film better than this concept -- but Pixar is known for their Story Trust -- it's essentially a Peer Review workshop where people provide feedback until they get to the best version of the story possible.
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting that the toys find their Happily Ever After in a kindergarten in this first version -- whereas in Toy Story 3, the preschool is *definitely not* presented that way. What do you think?
I didn't know about the Story Trust, so that's cool to think that many different versions of other films were made before the final ones that we see. I also think that the contrast between Toy Story 3 preschool and kindergarten are so different, but I think it's because in this version of the movie the toys really just want to be played with and they don't have such a nice prior life to compare it to like the toys in Toy Story do.
DeleteWow, this is so interesting. I think, to answer your question, that the Tinny version is interesting and I can see where it loosely relates to the later Toy Story films, with the kindergarten happily ever after (which we learn is not that "happily" of an after), but I would not say I like this version any more than the one we have. I think Woody and Buzz, are like you said, more interesting and unique. Though you mentioned there are other toys in the original Tinny I think that the characterization of Buzz and many of the other classic toys from Toy Story really make the film. The diversity in characters of Toy Story offers the viewers a "pick your favorite" that I always loved. I loved Barbie, for obvious reasons and little bo peep. My cousin always loved Jessie. Who is your favorite character from Toy Story 1+?
ReplyDeleteYes, it's definitely an appealing movie because of the pick you favorite type thing. I think that my favorite character is Buzz.
DeleteI also did not know about this original plan for Toy Story. I do see how the version they released would have more potential for sequels as the characters have more depth and a story we follow. We don't just get attached to the toys but to Andy and his college journey, as well. The original version would resemble a fairytale more, with the classic happily ever after. Not romantic love, but still love from kids that are playing with them.
